Former Australia captain Tim Paine announced his retirement from the game after Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield match against Queensland. Wicketkeeper Paine captained Australia in 23 Test matches from 2018 to 2021.
He played 35 Test matches in total. He was given the responsibility in 2018 after Smith was removed from the captaincy in the ball-tampering scandal. Penn had to relinquish the captaincy in 2021 when he was accused of sending indecent messages to a Tasmania staffer.
Tim Paine played his first Test against Pakistan in 2010 at Lord’s. He scored 1534 runs in 35 Tests at an average of 32.63, with 92 being his best score. He made 157 victims behind the wicket. Apart from this, he also played in 35 ODIs and 12 T20 Internationals for Australia.
Earlier last year, Cricket Australia had dropped several players including Tim Paine from the new central contracts for male players. Apart from Penn, these included players like all-rounder Moises Henriques, batsman Ben McDermott. Tim Paine’s name was dropped because of his involvement in a sex scandal. Penn had resigned from the captaincy only after being named in the sex scandal and took an indefinite break from cricket. Now he has retired.
