Australia got a new captain in the ODI format, an important decision taken before the World Cup
Australia’s regular captain Pat Cummins was recently dropped from the 5-match ODI series between South Africa and Australia from September 7. A wrist injury was cited as the main reason for Cummins’ exit. But now Australia has chosen a new captain in his place. Mitchell Marsh was chosen as the captain for the T-20 series to be held in South Africa, so now he will be seen captaining the Australia team in the ODI series as well.
Apart from Mitchell Marsh, many other important changes have been made in the ODI squad. Veteran batsman Steve Smith has been ruled out of the entire tour of South Africa, while Mitchell Starc will also be ruled out of the ODI series due to injury. Australia announced their T20 and ODI squads, and Steve Smith was formally named as the opening batsman in the T20 format. But he will not be part of the T20 and ODI series due to a wrist injury. Ashton Turner has been chosen to replace Steve Smith in the T20 series while Marnus Labuschagne has been chosen in the ODIs.
Starc has been ruled out of the ODI series due to a hamstring injury sustained during the Ashes series. That is why young bowler Spencer Johnson has got a place in his place. Johnson was only selected in the T20 squad but will now replace Starc in the ODI squad.
