SL vs BAN Match : What is the rule of time out due to which Angelo Mathews was out without playing the ball?

Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka became the first batsman to be timed out in the history of international cricket. The 38th match of the World Cup 2023 between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is being played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, in which Angelo Mathews was called out for not facing the ball on time. A time-out appeal was made by Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan. So let’s find out, what is the time out rule?

According to MCC, the governing body of cricket, after a batsman is dismissed or retired, the next batsman has to face the ball within 2 minutes, failing which the batsman is declared out.

As for Angelo Mathews, he came to the crease after Sadira Samarawickrama’s wicket fell, but due to a problem with the helmet, he ordered another helmet. However, Angelo Mathews did not face his first ball. After Samarawickrama’s wicket fell, Mathews passed two minutes and did not play a ball.

Because of this, opposing captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed to the umpire for Mathews’ time. However, after Shakib’s appeal, Mathews showed the broken helmet to the umpire and Shakib, taking time to play the first ball. But Shakib Al Hasan did not change his decision. Mathews thus became the first batsman to be timed out.

Let us tell you that Bangladesh has become the first team to be eliminated from the tournament. Under Shakib’s captaincy, Bangladesh started the campaign by winning the first match against Afghanistan. After that the team lost 6 consecutive matches. While Bangladesh won the eighth match of the tournament against Sri Lanka by three wickets.
