World Cup 2023 : Afghanistan overtakes Pakistan, one match changed the entire points table

The 2023 ODI World Cup has so far been a historic one for Afghanistan as the team beat Netherlands by 7 wickets at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow to clinch their fourth win of the tournament. With this win, Afghanistan moved up to the fifth position in the points table and overtook Pakistan. After four wins, the Afghan team is on par with New Zealand and Australia with 8 points. While defending champions England remain at number 10.

Afghanistan have played 7 matches in the tournament, in which the team has won 4. While Pakistan, which is ranked sixth below Afghanistan, has won three out of seven matches. In such a situation, the Afghan team can win the next match and become a strong contender to go to the semi-finals and the dream of the Pakistan team to reach the semi-finals can be broken.

In the top-4, hosts India are at the top position with 14 points, becoming the first semi-finalist. After that, South Africa is at the second position with 12 points. Then Australia and New Zealand are at the third and fourth position with 8 points each. Australia’s net run rate is much better than New Zealand’s, due to which they are above the New Zealand team. Fourth-ranked New Zealand will play their next match against sixth-ranked Pakistan.

Ahead of the top-4, Afghanistan are fifth with 8 points and a net run rate of negative -0.330. Pakistan is sixth with 6 points and a net run rate of negative -0.024, Sri Lanka is seventh with 4 points and a net run rate of -1.162, Netherlands is eighth with 4 points and a net run rate of -1.398 and Bangladesh is ninth. And defending champions England are at 10th place with 2 points.
